Every web designer is familiar with WordPress and its strong designing capabilities. WordPress allows you to create beautiful and user-friendly websites. Besides tools and widgets, it also offers some free themes for website design. Of course, there are also plenty of paid themes available in the market that clients can buy online for custom WordPress website design.

If you want to design a WordPress theme and make some money, here are a few helpful guidelines for you.

Validate Your Code- You may have confidence in your designing skills, but don’t underestimate the importance of code validation. Sometimes designers make small coding mistakes and the theme does not run properly on browsers. Therefore, always validate the HTML and CSS to avoid coding errors.

Make It Browser Friendly- Web users’ access a site from different browsers. Hence, you must check your theme in all popular browsers before selling it to a client. Check the theme in Chrome, IE, Opera, Firefox and Safari. Your theme should support older versions of popular browsers (IE6, Firefox 3) as well.

Comment Your Code- When you design a custom theme, you have to edit the default WP codes. Write down important “comments” in the HTML document to help other web programmers understand your coding pattern. Your client may hire a website design company India to modify some parts of your theme and if you don’t provide proper documentation, other programmers will get confused.

Design a Unique Theme- Use your designing skills and create a unique theme to attract more clients. You can take inspiration from famous designers’ creations, but don’t reproduce their designs.

Prepare for the Test Run- When you will start the “test run”, WordPress Theme Viewer will pour lots of default content. Hence, format the content code to handle the default WordPress content. Test run is the ultimate analysis of a theme and if customers don’t like the theme in test run, they won’t pay for it.

Leave Space for Content- Every designer wants to prove his designing skills and impress the viewers, but as a responsible designer, you should leave enough space for content as well.  Clients are not concerned about your feelings; they just want to promote their products and services.

Make It Widget Ready- WordPress has a large widget library and widgets play a very important role in web development. Design a theme that supports variety of widgets without any technical problem.

Customize the 404 Page- Designers often pay no attention to the 404 page, but it’s actually one of the most important pages in your theme. A blunt “page not found” message can mar user experience. You should customize the 404 page design and write a nice message to retain viewers’ attention.

Customize All the Pages- A vast theme has a number of pages and you must customize all of them. Don’t forget less used templates like, “Attachment page” template and “Search results” template page. Your one small mistake can irritate the users.

Provide Immediate Support- Offer quality web design solutions to keep your clients happy. If they face any problem during theme installation process, help them immediately via phone or email.

Follow these tips to design a unique and user friendly WordPress theme. Before you launch the theme in online market, create a dummy website and test its features to make sure that there is no error in your theme design.

Thanks for the tips! I am a newcomer in the designing industry and have created some WordPress themes. Can you tell me some good sites where I can sell them? Or, should I just upload them in my portfolio and wait for buyers?

You can sell your WordPress themes at http://themeforest.net/ and http://www.buysellwp.com/ You can create a portfolio site and upload the themes for buyers as well, but it may not attract as many customers as the sites we have mentioned.
