When you are designing a website, balancing different elements is a tough task. In a good website, you can find text content, images, videos, audio and many more things. As a web developer, you have to place those elements properly to create a neat and clean look.

Different designers take different approaches to create website layout. Some of them prefer using grids to give the site a balanced and organized look.

Website Design

Some people say that those vertical and horizontal lines create an obstruction to the eyes, but they forget that even newspapers and other print materials also use grids for reader-friendly design. If you have any doubts about the effectiveness of grids in your mind, read on to know how it can enhance your website design.

Gives You a Preconception- When you start discussing the project with the client, a blueprint of the primary layout appears in your mind. As soon as the meeting is over, draw some grids and place sample content so that you can work in an organized manner in future. You may change the placement of text, images or videos during the project, but as you have already placed the main elements, there is no chance of missing anything accidentally.

Maintains Balance- Weight distribution is a critical factor of web development. If you place text content at one side and images on the other side, it will look disoriented. With the help of grids, you can place text and images in an organized manner and maintain the visual balance.

Makes the Site User-friendly- It helps the users find important content easily and quickly. For instance, an e-commerce site can be designed like a book shelf. Display one key item of each category on the homepage to increase your sales figures.

Gives Professional Look- Small things can make or break a brand. When people surf internet for content, they give high importance to the website design. If the overall look of a site does not impress them, they simply close the window. Grids add elegance and value to your website and grab viewers’ attention immediately.

Works As a Guideline- Dividing the entire layout in small parts gives you a better idea of content placement. Gridirons work like small rooms of an apartment and it’s easier to fill the rooms to give the apartment a wholesome look.

Easier to Maintain Typographic Balance- Fonts help readers identify the most important message of a website. With the help of framework, you can use right font sizes and draw readers’ attention. The site looks well balanced and conveys messages faster.

Ample White Space- While developing a site, designers often try to add too many elements on the homepage and jeopardize the layout. Too much text hampers readability and drives users away. Grids make sure that you leave enough white space and increase readability.

These are some of the advantages of grids. It’s not mandatory to use them in every project, but if you want to work in an organized manner and develop websites quickly without taking too much stress, then grids are your best friend.

It is true that grids help you place text and images in a systematic manner, but the discussion could have been more specific as to the kind of grids used. For example, 1, 2, 3, column grids are suitable for websites having loads of text. These are ideal for lengthy articles. On the other hand, 4 columns grids are best for sites having text (both long and short articles), images and other graphic components.
